configuring Your Browser:
JavaScript and Cookies

Many web-based forms and surveys require that your web browser allow the use of JavaScript and cookies. When these capabilities are not "enabled" in your browser, you must change the browser's properties and have these capabilities enabled. If you need to modify your browser's configuration, the required steps will depend on the browser and its version. The most common combinations are described below.

If these instructions fail to solve the problem, check that the clock setting on your desktop system is correct.

  WINDOWS MAC  
   

Firefox 2 or 3 for Windows

  • From the Tools menu, select Options....
  • Select the Privacy icon on the top.
  • Check the box marked Accept cookies from sites.
  • Optionally, check the box marked Accept third-party cookies.
    •
  • Select the Content icon on the top.
  • Check the box marked Enable Java.
  • Check the box marked Enable JavaScript.
  • Close window.
  • Reload page.

Internet Explorer 8 for Windows

  • Select Tools > Internet Options.
  • Click on the Privacy tab.
  • Move the slide bar to the bottom notch, for Accept All Cookies.
  • Optionally, move the slide bar up to low or Medium level.
    •
  • Click the Custom Level... button.
  • Scroll down to the .NET Framework section.
  • Select High Safety for Permissions for components with manifest.
  • Scroll down to the Scripting section.
  • Select Enable for Active Scripting and Scripting of Java Applets.
  • Click OK.
  • Select YES if a box appears to confirm.
  • Click OK. Close window.
  • Reload page.

Opera 9 for Windows

  • From the Tools menu:
    • Check Quick Preferences > Enable Java.
    • Check Quick Preferences > Enable JavaScript.
    • Check Quick Preferences > Enable cookies.
  • Reload page.

Firefox 2 or 3 for Mac

  • From the Firefox menu, select Preferences....
  • Select the Privacy icon on the top.
  • Check the box marked Accept cookies from sites.
  • Optionally, check the box marked Accept third-party cookies.
    •
  • Select the Content icon on the top.
  • Check the box marked Enable Java.
  • Check the box marked Enable JavaScript.
  • Close window.
  • Reload page.

Safari 1 to 4 for Mac

  • From the Safari menu, select Preferences....
  • Select the Security icon.
  • Check the box marked Enable Java.
  • Check the box marked Enable JavaScript.
  • Select one of the two options that allow Safari to accept cookies:
    • Only for sites you navigate to
    • Always
  • Close window.
  • Reload page.

Opera 9 for Mac

  • From the Opera menu:
    • Check Quick Preferences > Enable Java.
    • Check Quick Preferences > Enable JavaScript.
    • Check Quick Preferences > Enable cookies.
  • Reload page.

Firefox 1.5 for Windows

  • From the Tools menu, select Options....
  • Select the Privacy icon on the top.
  • Select the Cookies tab to view the available options.
  • Check the box marked Allow sites to set cookies.
  • Optionally, check the box marked for the originating site only.
    •
  • Select the Content icon on the top.
  • Check the box marked Enable Java.
  • Check the box marked Enable JavaScript.
  • Click OK. Close window.
  • Reload page.

Firefox 1.5 for Mac

  • From the Firefox menu, select Preferences....
  • Select the Privacy icon on the top.
  • Select the Cookies tab to view the available options.
  • Check the box marked Allow sites to set cookies.
  • Optionally, check the box marked for the originating site only.
    •
  • Select the Content icon on the top.
  • Check the box marked Enable Java.
  • Check the box marked Enable JavaScript.
  • Close window.
  • Reload page.

Firefox 1.0 for Windows

  • From the Tools menu, select Options....

Internet Explorer 7 for Windows

  • Select Tools > Internet Options.
  • Click on the Privacy tab.

Internet Explorer 6 for Windows

  • Select Tools > Internet Options.

  • Select High Safety.
  • Scroll down to the Scripting section.

  • Select YES if a box appears to confirm.
  • Click OK. Close window.
  • Reload page.

Internet Explorer 5 for Windows

  • Select Tools > Internet Options.
  • Click on the Security tab.
  • Click the Custom Level button.
  • Scroll down the list of settings to the Cookies section.
  • Select Enable for both categories of cookies.
  • Scroll down to the Java section.
  • Select High Safety.
  • Scroll down to the Scripting section.
  • Select Enable for all three categories of scripting.
  • Click OK.
  • Select YES if a box appears to confirm.
  • Click OK. Close window.
  • Reload page.

Internet Explorer 5 for Mac

  • From the Explorer menu, select Preferences....
  • Click on the word Cookies in the Receiving Files section.
  • Select one of the three options for When receiving cookies:
  • Never Ask
  • Ask for each site
  • Ask for each cookie
    •
  • Click on the word Web Content in the Web Browser section.
  • Check Enable scripting.
  • Close window.
  • Reload page.

Mozilla 1.7 for Windows and Mac

  • For Windows install, select Preferences... from the Edit menu. For Mac install, select Preferences... from the Mozilla menu.
  • Double-click on the words Privacy & Security on the left.
  • Click on the word Cookies.
  • Select one of the two options that allow Mozilla to accept cookies:
    • Allow cokies for the originating web site only
    • Allow all cookies
  • Double-click on the word Advanced on the left.
  • Check the box marked Enable Java.
  • Click on Scripts & Plugins on the left.
  • Check the box marked Navigator.
  • For Windows install, click OK and close window. For Mac install, close window.
  • Reload page.

Netscape 7 for Windows and Mac

  • For Windows install, select Preferences... from the Edit menu. For Mac install, select Preferences... from the Netscape menu.
  • Double-click on the words Privacy & Security on the left.
  • Click on the word Cookies.
  • Select one of the two options that allow Netscape to accept cookies:
    • Enable for the originating web site only
    • Enable all cookies
  • Double-click on the word Advanced on the left.
  • Check the box marked Enable Java.
  • Click on Scripts & Plugins on the left.
  • Check the box marked Navigator.
  • For Windows install, click OK and close window. For Mac install, close window.
  • Reload page.

Netscape 4 for Windows and Mac

  • For Windows install, select Preferences... from the Edit menu. For Mac install, select Preferences... from the Netscape menu.
  • Click on the word Advanced on the left side of the window.
  • On the right, check all boxes in the top half.
  • In the bottom half of the window, select one of the two options that allow Netscape to accept cookies:
    • Accept all cookies
    • Accept only cookies that get sent back to the originating server
  • For Windows install, click OK and close window. For Mac install, close window.
  • Reload page.
